Delivery Fee Charging & Free Delivery

Choose whether your online order form charges the delivery fee once per order or for each delivery time, and set the order value above which delivery is free.

Two settings on your online order form decide how much of the delivery fee a customer actually pays: whether the fee is charged once or on every drop, and the order size above which delivery is free.

Where the settings are

Open Online → Order Forms, choose the form, then Manage → Settings. Both settings sit in the delivery section, below the days you deliver on:

  • Charge the delivery fee — once per order, or for each delivery time
  • Free delivery over — the order value at which delivery becomes free

The delivery section of an online order form's settings: Charge the delivery fee with Once per order selected and For each delivery time beneath it, then a Free delivery over box reading 500.00.

They are set per form, so a corporate form and a public form can charge differently. They apply to the fee however Puree worked it out, whether from a saved address or from your postcode zones. See Delivery Fees by Postcode for where the fee itself comes from.

Charging once per order, or for each delivery

A delivery fee covers a trip, and some orders are several trips. Morning tea and lunch to the same office is two drops; a week-long job is a drop every day. Charge the delivery fee decides how many times the fee is charged on one order:

Once per order. One fee, however many delivery times the order has. This is the default, and what every form did before the setting existed, so nothing changes unless you choose otherwise.

For each delivery time. The fee is multiplied by the number of delivery times on the order. An order with morning tea and lunch pays twice, and a five-day job pays five times.

Only delivery times the customer has actually set are counted, and an order is never charged less than once. An order still being built has no delivery times yet and is treated as one delivery.

When the fee is charged more than once, the checkout shows the working next to the line, such as Delivery fee ($25.00 × 3), because $75.00 on its own reads as a mistake.

Collection orders are never charged a delivery fee, whichever setting is chosen.

One address can disagree with the form

A saved customer address carries its own Charge it setting: Same as the order form, Once per order or For each delivery time. It only takes effect when that address is also supplying the fee, through its Default delivery fee. That lets you charge a regular a flat rate per order at their office while the form charges everyone else per drop. See Customers, Contacts & Addresses for saved addresses and their fees.

Free delivery over an order value

Free delivery over takes a figure in your own currency. An order that size or bigger is not charged for delivery. Leave it blank, shown as No free delivery, to always charge.

Three details are worth knowing:

  • It is measured on the order itself, not counting the delivery fee. A big enough fee would otherwise push the order over the line and pay for itself.
  • It applies to the whole delivery charge, after the once-per-order or per-delivery multiplication. A per-drop fee on a qualifying order goes to zero, not down by one drop.
  • It only applies to a fee Puree already knows. Where the fee is still to be worked out, it stays that way. “Free” and “not worked out yet” are different promises, and an unknown fee is never quietly turned into a free one.

What the customer sees

The checkout tells the customer where they stand while they can still do something about it. Below the delivery fee line they see Spend $18.50 more for free delivery, and once they cross the threshold it becomes Free delivery on orders over $500.00. The fee is worked out again every time the basket changes, so the message keeps up as items are added and removed.

If no postcode or address has been entered yet, the cart shows the total without a delivery fee and a note that the fee will be added once their address is confirmed.

Card payments

If the form takes card payment through Stripe, the delivery fee is part of the amount charged at checkout, so these settings decide what the card is charged. Set them, and your delivery zones, before enabling card payment on the form. See Online Order Form Payment Methods.
